An original hand embroidery on cotton, with cotton threads and glass beads, 2024
Thanks to criminalisation, oppression and prejudice, for centuries LGBTQI+ people have been forced to create their own support structures, their chosen families. Shunned, othered, ignored, we create our own queer communities, spaces, rituals and rights of passage.
“Sooner or later we must join the diaspora, venturing beyond our biological family to find our logical one, the one that actually makes sense.”
Armistead Maupin
I escaped my Sussex upbringing to find my logical family and I joined them in the gay bars of 80s and 90s London - The Coleherne, Brief Encounter, The Bell, Crews, Bang, The Hoist, XXL. They are all sadly gone now, as are some of my logical family from those days, taken too young by AIDS.
